Back in 2011, I renovated this derelict cottage in Ireland. It was filled entirely with junk, everything you would expect in a farming outhouse. It consisted of a tiny entrance hall which led straight into the kitchen, with the living room on the left. Inside the kitchen were five little stairs up to one bedroom. Voilà, three rooms in the entire house. Underneath the bedroom, there was a low-roofed shed, which was accessed from outside.
I kept all the (3 feet thick!) interior walls, just knocking the wooden entrance to make the kitchen more light. Upstairs, the bedroom was quite spacious in width so we built a dividing wall to create a small bathroom. We insulated the entire house – floors, walls and ceiling – before plastering. New double glazed windows were installed and the finishing touch was the Irish style half door.
What do you think? Pretty scary before picture, eh? I feel like the house was spewing out it’s contents in the ‘before’ pic 🙂
I will follow up later with more photos of the inside of the property and the many steps taken to get it up to scratch.
